Great Reasons to Use Cloth

Have you wondered if using cloth is really worth it? If you have, please read below for four great reasons to use cloth!

Security

Imagine it's 10:00 p.m., you're just getting ready to go to bed with baby and you start the last diaper change for the night. . . except that you realize there is only one disposable diaper left! You and your spouse exchange dirty looks and your husband quickly leaves to make that late night run for diapers.

Fortunately, life with a baby doesn't have to be this way. If you were using cloth diapers in this scenario, you would immediately throw the diapers in the wash (on the quick setting of course). Then you would scrounge around in the back of the changing table for that old "all in one" that you kept for emergencies. Having an ample supply of diapers ready is a stress reliever when you are a new parent!

Return to a Simpler Time

In previous generations, families before us had relatively simple baby necessities. Using cloth material was the only viable way to diaper a baby, unless you were of Indian descent. Indian mothers usually wore babies on their back in a papoose, and they used feathers and other objects for baby's "diaper."

Thankfully in today's world we no longer have to rely on diaper pins, rubber pants and smelly diaper pails. We can still enjoy a return to a simpler time (without all the fuss!). Cloth reminds us of the previous lifestyle of our ancestors, a lifestyle which was much simpler and much less taxing on our community and our earth.

Working for a Sustainable Future

Have you ever thought that every action you make is closely watched and then intimidated by those tiny people in your house? When you use cloth, you model in a small way to your children that you care about what happens to baby's diapers, and ultimately, the earth. You unknowingly teach them to think that it's natural to reuse something, and that to just throw away something is not necessarily a good thing. As St. Francis of Assisi once said, "Evangelize, and if you have to, use words."

Investing in YOUR Future

As a cloth diapering parent, you realize the savings of using cloth is also a benefit. Make that savings work for you in the long run! Invest fifty dollars per month in a mutual fund, or start saving for baby's college education NOW. When you use disposables you are essentially throwing money in the trash. On the other hand, cloth diapering is actually an investment which will pay you a return in the future!

Our Attitudes Make all the Difference

The other day I was thinking about how much our attitudes impact whether we are happy or miserable. Earlier last month I started a retirement account for myself (after procrastinating for about five years). After thinking about how much we save per month by using cloth diapers for two children, I quickly realized we could afford to save a small portion for my retirement. On the other hand, I could lament the fact that I have to wash diapers and in the process, create a lot of negative energy around me. But you know what? It's more rewarding to save for our future instead of complaining right now! (Plus, who wants to "teach" their children to complain about doing all those household tasks in the first place?)

I've noticed people who are pessimistic about using cloth diapers are generally the ones also complaining about the money they "have" to spend on disposables. What about looking at using cloth diapers in a positive light, and spending that energy on something that will benefit our families? I've heard of moms that will save for a new appliance and then happily go purchase it with cash after saving for months by not using disposables. I believe it is more rewarding to spend that money on something that will work for us in the future than it is to use something that will benefit us so little in the short run. The convenience of disposables is nice, I admit. But five years from now when you are using your new freezer virtually every day (and Jr. has been out of diapers for a few years) the previous decision you made will still be benefiting your entire family.

In our case it's a plan to start a practical savings plan for our retirement. But your family may have different goals, like saving for college educations, pre-paying your mortgage or paying for music lessons. Make decisions now to benefit your future. Reflect positively on your circumstances, (in this case a frugal lifestyle) and see the blessings that will come from your positive attitude.
